VERMONT WRITES DAY!!!

Today is Vermont Writes Day!

As a class we used the prompts provided by the Young Writers Project, to write for seven minutes.  Maybe tonight as a fun, family activity, you could all have parents, babysitters, grandparents, friends, or whoever ,to celebrate writing by participating with us!  Then, there will be a special site for anyone to use on that day only on vermontwritesday.org (click on it) .  Read what others around the state wrote (as well as your classmates).

Here are the suggested prompts:

Irene: Pick a recent moment that reminded you of the impact of Tropical Storm Irene. Share a story.

Wildest excuse ever: You’ve just remembered that a homework assignment is due in an hour. Craft the wildest excuse ever that someone would believe.

First lines: Choose one and write a story, essay or poem:

“Walking to school yesterday, I discovered the most amazing . . .”

“The first thing I remember . . .”

“It was 7 minutes after midnight. The dog was lying on the grass in the middle of the lawn in front of Mrs. Shears’ house . . .”

(The opening of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon)

Conversation: Imagine you are meeting someone famous – from present day or the past – describe the encounter. What would you say and do?

What’s the title and category of your piece????

Vermont Geography & Test Time

Part of our social studies curriculum involves learning about the geography and history of Vermont.  In order to understand the “lay of the land”, third and fourth graders are learning the names of our fourteen counties.  Here is a map of the counties:
