The netbooks are pared down versions that are meant to use the resources on-line as opposed to installed software. If the reason for not going with a laptop are improved portability and the iOS software and all of its apps, as well as better battery life and access to 3G cellular then YES! The iPad would be a great replacement. Just keep in mind that it's not a substantial price savings.
